What is a Shampoo Bar?
What is a Beer Shampoo Bar?
A beer shampoo bar is an all natural conditioning shampoo that is made into a solid bar form and it is a real shampoo .
How is a Beer Shampoo bar different than other shampoo bars?
Our Beer Shampoo bars are made with vegetable oils and essential oils that have many benefits for your hair and scalp. We even go as far as making our homemade shampoo bars with our own home brewed beer!
Our shampoo bars contain no chemicals, no artificial fragrance, color, preservatives, alcohol, laurel sulfate, DEA, detergents or any other synthetic additives that you will find in commercial shampoos.
How Do I use a Beer Shampoo Bar?
The method is quite simple actually it will just take a couple of times to get used to! For my beer shampoo bars it is best to get your hair thoroughly wet first, then wet the bar slightly and simply rub the bar directly on your hair until you have covered your whole head.
Then put the bar down and use your hands to rub the oils into your hair and you should develop a super creamy, rich lather. Then once you have rubbed all of the oils into your hair and worked up a good lather rinse thoroughly. If you feel like you still have oils left that haven’t lathered then simply work them to lather and rinse. The beauty of the shampoo bar is there is not waste of taking too much or too little!
For different hair types you may have to experiment on what works best for you , whether you have short, long, fine, curly, thick etc.
For me I have long, curly, fine, coarse hair and for me what works best is the following:
1. Wet my hair
2. Rub the shampoo bar on the top of my head
3. Lather the oils into my hair without going to the ends.. ( I have very curly hair that tangles easily so its best if I don’t go to the ends with the lather)
4. Rinse the shampoo out and the oils that run down are enough to get the ends of my hair
5 Gently towel dry
6. Use a wide tooth comb ( for curly hair I never use a brush as it rips my hair out and causes horrible dead ends)
7. I use a leave-in conditioner just on my ends ( I made a beer conditioner that I use)
How well do beer shampoo bars lather?
Our beer shampoo bars lather extremely well if you follow the directions on wetting your hair first, rubbing the bar on your head and then using your hands to create a luxurious lather. You will be amazed at how well they lather!
Will I still need to use Conditioner?
Well this is a depends upon many factors beginning with your hair type. If you generally use conditioner now because your hair is dry then possible yes and possibly no. There are many different kinds of hair conditioners as well, some are for leaving in to get the tangles out, some are for restoring shine and luster, some are for making your hair more manageable. Also remember that most liquid shampoos actually over time dry your hair out hence making you need to use conditioner. So you may find that you need conditioner to begin with and then over time as your hair begins to get more healthy after using the beer shampoo bars you may find that you no longer need the conditioner.
This is a hard one to answer as there are so many different hair types and factors and I think it is safe to say that with trial and error you will be able to figure out if you need conditioner depending upon the results you are seeing with your hair.
Having said that if you have coarse tangly hair like I do you may find that you do still need conditioner. Hair tangles as a result of each hair going in many different directions Each strand of hair has cuticles on it which lie on the outer layer and when they are damaged it causes hair to tangle. Furthermore brushing your hair to get tangles out further damages the cuticles.
Due to the fact that everyone has different hair types and factors like how you shampoo your hair and brush it can affect whether you feel the need for conditioner. Also water is a major factor in the health of you hair as well. I know that I used to switch shampoos all the time trying to get my hair to be not dry and healthy again and I did this for years with no success. And every time I would get a new shampoo I would search for a new conditioner to get the tangles out. I also had to use so much conditioner to even get a brush through my hair. I tried brushing in the shower with conditioner in my hair, leave-in conditioner you name it I tried it to get rid of tangles and have soft hair. Nothing ever worked until I started using my Beer Shampoo Bars.
Sometimes it is good to use a natural vinegar rinse on your hair as well when switching over to a beer shampoo bar or if you feel like your hair needs some extra shine or bounce. The acid in the vinegar helps to coat your hairs outer cuticles and make them lie flat so you will have less tangles.
Do Beer Shampoo bars leave a residue and make my hair feel heavy?
You will hear that it is best to switch shampoos every couple of weeks which is a common mistake but you trust that your hairdresser knows what they are talking about so you do it. Your hair feels good for a week and then it feels dull and lifeless again.. So the cycle begins again, the next best shampoo and conditioner that comes out must be the one that is going to change my hair forever. Not!
If you are making a choice to get a Beer Shampoo bar and try it please give it an honest chance. Your hair will not be changed the first time you use it. You need to give the beer shampoo bar an honest try of at least 2 weeks to rid your hair of the chemicals and residue from commercial liquid shampoos and hair products that you have been using. Shampoo bars do not strip your hair the way liquid shampoos do so your hair is going to feel different at first than what you are used to. This is normal and once you get through the first 2 weeks you will love the way your hair feels.
If you are concerned about the residue that you feel, or if you have water that is hard you may want to try a vinegar rinse or even try to not wash your hair everyday. I find that if I wash my hair no more than 4 times a week it is very happy!
What is a Vinegar Rinse?
It is simply a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. I use ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of water. Simply pour over your hair after shampooing and rinsing and then rinse out the vinegar . Don’t worry once your hair dries you wont smell like vinegar!!
